My Review

I love reading different genre and this time I decided to delve into a contemporary Western romance. I'm always fascinated when men authors write romance and I must say, Richey did such a good job of pulling me into this story and into the lives of Jaxon and Annie. And his portrait of the way men and women react differently to things in a relationship was right on.

So essentially, this is the story of two high school sweethearts who marry young and then encounter a few hardships and tests to their marriage in the years that follow. Richey combined this romance with action adventure and I quickly and easily gobbled up this 426 page novel.

The two main characters are Jaxon and Annie, and while I loved Jaxon who was handsome, hard-working, loyal and brave, I had a harder time liking Annie who started out as a strong female character who was popular in school, yet compassionate and kind but ended up an insecure, suspicious and jealous wife. However, this didn't lessen my liking of this book or the author's writing. In fact it heightened my liking because an author who can make me delve me into a book so deep and get me so invested in the characters that I wanted to literally shake Annie at times while I admired the swoon-worthy Jaxon, is a talented author.

Richey's description of the Montana mountains made me picture the crisp morning scene and smell the pungent forest pine. The danger and wilderness enhanced the romantic suspense, with a mixed bag of faulty characters that brought the story alive to me. I applaud authors that can create a hot male character without sex scenes. That's right, it is possible! So if you like clean romance novels, this one fits the bill nicely.

I look forward to reading more of Richey's work. Clearly, this is an author who can spin a great clean romance frought with all kinds of conflicts for a thoroughly entertaining read.

Note: This book is rated PG. No profanity, brief romantic scenes with no sex.

And now for the guest post!

I've invited James Eric Richey to guest post on my blog. He so happens to send me one about the comparison of life to chocolate. Well, most of you know that I LOVE chocolate. How apropos!

Is Life Really Like a Box of Chocolate?
by James Eric Richey

We all know the famous line stated by Tom Hanks in the 1994 film, Forest Gump, “Life is like a box of chocolates—you never know what you are going to get.” How exactly is life related to a box of chocolate?

Chocolate is sweet, satisfying, and comforting. Does this imply that life will always be sweet and satisfying?

A box of chocolate has dark pieces of chocolate as part of its variety of choices. Those dark pieces could represent the times in life that will consist of trials or difficulties that may occur — they come to everyone, there is no way of avoiding them. Yet, those dark pieces of chocolate are still wrapped up in the sweetness that chocolate brings.

How can dark or challenging times still be sweet? Is it even possible for two opposites to occur at the same time? For many, they may look at their box of seemingly sweet morsels only to find that their box of chocolates is filled with disappointment, anguish, and hatred—all of the things that make life sour, not sweet.

For those people that have a positive outlook on life and can look and recognize the blessings, life for them will still be sweet and enjoyable just like the feelings a person receives when they eat even the dark pieces of chocolate from the box.

In the end, whatever box of chocolate we are dealt, we need to remember to be courageous, live life positively, accept the unexpected, and most importantly enjoy the chocolate along the way.
